Ticks Were Attacking This Customer’s Dog in Joplin — Here’s How We Fixed the Yard

When this customer in Joplin called us, she said her dog couldn’t go outside for more than 10–15 minutes without coming back covered in ticks.
Not one tick.
Multiple ticks. Every single time.
At first, they assumed the ticks were falling out of the trees onto their dog. They had already tried one of the DIY treatment kits that gets shipped to your house, but the problem kept getting worse.
After inspecting the property, it became pretty obvious why the ticks were so bad.
The backyard backed up to a large field that wasn’t being mowed regularly, and the yard itself had several shade trees creating cool, damp areas where ticks thrive during warmer weather.
That combination is almost perfect for tick activity in the Joplin area.
Why This Yard Had So Many Ticks
A lot of homeowners think ticks mainly live in tall grass in the middle of the yard or drop from trees onto people and pets.
In reality, most ticks stay lower to the ground and wait on vegetation for something to brush past them.
Properties near:
fields
wooded areas
overgrown fence lines
shaded tree lines
and unmowed areas
usually have much heavier tick pressure than open sunny yards.
In this case, the field behind the property was acting almost like a breeding ground. The shaded backyard gave the ticks a cool, humid place to survive once they moved closer to the home.
What We Did
For this property, we applied professional-grade granular tick treatment throughout the key problem areas of the yard.
Instead of just broadcasting product randomly, we focused heavily on:
shaded edges
transition areas
the rear property line near the field
around the trees
and the areas where the dog spent the most time
That’s usually where the majority of tick activity is concentrated.
A lot of DIY products fail because they treat the middle of the yard while the actual tick population is living around the perimeter and shaded edges.
How Long Did It Take To Work?
The customer reported a major improvement in about a week.
That timeline is actually pretty normal for professional tick treatments.
Many homeowners expect ticks to disappear overnight, but it takes time for ticks to come into contact with treated areas after application.
After the initial reduction, the dog was finally able to spend time outside again without constantly bringing ticks back into the house.
Do Ticks Really Fall From Trees?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear.
Ticks generally do NOT jump, fly, or intentionally fall from trees onto people.
Most tick species in Missouri and Oklahoma stay much lower to the ground and attach when:
pets brush through vegetation
people walk along edges
or animals travel through shaded transition areas
That’s why fence lines, leaf litter, shaded landscaping, and property edges are usually much more important than the center of the lawn.
Why Tick Problems Have Been So Bad Around Joplin
We’ve been seeing a huge increase in tick activity around Joplin this year, especially on properties near:
open fields
woods
creeks
and shaded subdivisions
The combination of moisture, mild temperatures, and thick vegetation creates ideal conditions for ticks to survive and reproduce.
Even well-kept neighborhoods can end up with serious tick problems if they border unmanaged land.
What Homeowners Can Do Right Now
If you’re dealing with ticks around your home, a few things can help reduce pressure quickly:
Keep grass trimmed regularly
Reduce heavy vegetation near fence lines
Avoid letting leaf litter build up
Limit overgrown shaded areas when possible
Keep pets on veterinarian-approved tick prevention
Treat high-risk areas before populations explode
The earlier tick problems are addressed, the easier they usually are to control.
At Assassin Pest Control, we provide professional tick treatments throughout Joplin and surrounding areas including Carl Junction, Lamar, Nevada and areas around Miami, OK.

Most severe tick infestations we inspect are concentrated around:
shaded yard edges
fence lines
tree lines
wooded borders
and properties near fields or unmanaged land
If your pets are constantly bringing ticks inside, there’s usually a reason — and treating the right areas makes all the difference.
