Termite Control: Why Liquid Chemical Treatments Might Be a Better Choice Over Bait Stations

At Assassin Pest Control, I’ve seen firsthand how effective termite treatments can be when they’re done right. I’m committed to ensuring my clients receive the best solutions for their pest control needs. While termite bait stations, like Sentricon, have gained popularity in recent years, I believe there are many downsides to consider before choosing them for your termite protection. Don't get me wrong; I looked into using bait stations for a while and was very close to offering it as a service. But as I began looking at the studies done around this option, I found that it was only in the interest of my wallet to offer bait stations and didn't serve the customer. In this post, I’ll outline why liquid chemical treatments for termites might be a better option for your home or business.

The Downsides of Termite Bait Stations

Termite bait stations, such as Sentricon, are designed to attract termites to a bait within a monitoring station placed in the ground around your property. While these stations can be an option for termite control, there are some notable downsides that I’ve encountered over the years.

  1. Slow Action

Termite bait stations work by enticing termites to feed on the bait, which is laced with a slow-acting poison. This method can take a significant amount of time to eliminate the colony, sometimes months or even longer (up to a year). During this period, termites continue to damage your home or business, leading to potential structural harm.

  2. Regular Monitoring Required

Bait stations need regular monitoring to ensure they are still effective and that termites are consuming the bait. This can be time-consuming and requires the stations to be checked frequently, often at heavy, additional costs. If a station isn’t checked regularly, it could go unnoticed if the termites aren’t feeding on the bait as expected, leaving your property unprotected.

  3. Not Ideal for Large Infestations

If your home or business is experiencing a large termite infestation, bait stations might not provide the immediate protection you need. The slow nature of this method can cause more extensive damage in the meantime. Liquid treatments, on the other hand, are designed to act much faster, offering quicker results.

  4. Reliance on Chance

Bait stations are reliant on termites finding and eating the bait. Unlike cockroaches and ants, termites don't hunt down food with a sense of smell. They assign certain groups of their colony to go off and dig around to find other food sources for their colony. This means it is left to pure chance that a termite finds one of the bait stations, reports it as a potential food sorce to the colony and then is accepted by the colony. If termite colonies are not close to a bait station, or if they aren’t attracted to it, the system may fail to protect your property. A liquid chemical treatment forms a barrier around your property, ensuring that termites have to pass through it to get up to the wooden structure of your house, regardless of where they are.

The Upsides of Liquid Chemical Treatments

As an alternative to bait stations, liquid chemical treatments provide a more direct and efficient way to handle termite infestations. Here's why I recommend liquid treatments to my clients:

  1. Immediate Protection

Liquid chemical treatments create a barrier around the perimeter of your home, ensuring termites can’t enter the structure. Unlike bait stations, which can take months to work, liquid treatments offer almost immediate results and long-lasting protection.

  2. No Need for Constant Monitoring

Once the liquid treatment is applied, there's no need for constant checks or monitoring. You won’t have to worry about missed termite activity or wondering whether the bait stations are still effective. A one-time application provides long-term peace of mind.

  3. Highly Effective for Large Infestations

If you're dealing with a significant termite problem, liquid chemical treatments are often the best choice. They provide quicker knockdown of termite colonies, minimizing the potential for further damage and giving you fast results when time is of the essence.

  4. Prevents Future Infestations

When termite colonies get too large for their food source, The queen appoints a new queen and a certain amount of reproductives and workers to "swarm" and start a new colony elsewhere. This means that year after year, you may get swarmed by the same colony splitting from an old tree stump in your neighbor's yard, that stack of fire wood along the back fence that was there when you moved in, or any number of other locations. Liquid treatments form a protective barrier around the foundation of your home for years. This can prevent new colonies from establishing themselves near your property, offering long-term protection. Once applied, the treatment continues to work, safeguarding your home from future invasions.

  5. Trusted and Proven Method

Liquid treatments have been used successfully by pest control professionals for decades. They are highly reliable and trusted by many experts in the industry for providing comprehensive termite control.
